For the love of pubs, even when you don’t drink alcohol
Sober Girl Society founder Millie Gooch on why you can still love the pub while being sober
Seeing as not a drop of alcohol has passed my lips since 2018, people are always shocked when I tell them how much I love pubs. But to me, the pub is more than just a place to drink; it’s a community hub where people share, socialise, and enjoy each other’s company. When I was younger, my Dad’s mate owned a pub, so I spent a lot of weekends running around the beer garden and learning to play pool. Therefore, technically, my relationship with pubs began way before I’d ever had my first pint.
When I decided to give up alcohol, I was worried that I would have to give up pubs as well.
But if anything, the love affair has only grown.
I love the atmosphere, the people. I love the cosy, welcoming feel of a pub, the belly laughter, the pub grub and added points for a dart board or regular pub quiz.
Being sober has really allowed me to enjoy the pub experience in a whole new way. I can fully engage in conversations, remember everything the next day, and I’ve also discovered a whole range of delicious non-alcoholic drinks, from craft sodas to alcohol-free cocktails. Because, the good news is, pubs are more inclusive than ever. No matter your preference, whether enjoying a drink, reducing your intake, or staying mindful, most pubs now have something for everyone.
So, cheers to the pub, even if you’re not drinking!
