Football is without doubt one of the world’s greatest sports, and every four years the FIFA World Cup comes around, making the lives of us football fans just that little bit sweeter.

Here are some interesting facts about the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

1. As of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, 79 national teams have competed in the final tournaments. This will become 80 after Qatar make its debut in 2022.

2. There are only eight countries that have won the FIFA World Cup.

3. With 16 goals during his FIFA World Cup career, Miroslav Klose has scored the most goals in World Cup history.

4. Ahead of the 1966 tournament that was taking place in England, the trophy was on display at the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. A thief mysteriously evaded security and escaped with the trophy. It was later found under a bush in a residential area by a dog named Pickles.

5. Stadium 974, Qatar is the first demountable stadium. Built out of shipping containers, will go on to be completely dismantled once the tournament ends.

6.  In 1950 India qualified for the World Cup, but opted out of the tournament. The reasoning is that they weren’t allowed to play barefoot, which was only way the team had practiced at that point.

7. Brazil are the only country to play in every World Cup tournament since the competition’s inception. Brazil has hosted the World Cup twice, winning the FIFA World Cup 5 times and has finished in the top four 11 times.
