When visiting a new bar, there's always that split-second moment of wariness, of wandering into the unknown.
From bitter experience, your thirsty reviewer has often found a menacing, black exterior, dim windows through which a few spectral figures can be made out, and a sign emblazoned with a farmyard animal is normally a dangerous combination.
The sort of place where the music zips off with a vinyl thud as you walk in and promptly get beaten with big sticks. The Pied Bull, on Streatham High Road, seems such a place.
But how wrong can you be? Stupid, stupid Pubspy.
Because brave souls who open the doors to the Pied Bull can discover a welcoming bar to suit all tastes "something the mixed crowd there appeared to back up.

With its dark decor, fireplace (not roaring when I visited, but I'm sure that's not always the case) and moody lighting it feels cosy. The one big blot was the service " though not because the barmaid who served me wasn't friendly to me and everyone else she served, but because she was the only barmaid. And the only waitress.
Maybe a colleague had nipped off for a spot of ice skating down the road, but from what I could see, having one person to do all the front-of-house duties isn't enough and it took me six or seven minutes to get served on a quiet-ish afternoon. But don't let that quibble put you off.
The Pied Bull is an excellent venue, and one which I will happily entice a few friends to come to for a game of pool in the future.
